The small brunette smiled broadly as she walked into the therapy space. “So, m’dear, make a move on the doctor you had your eye on yet?” she asked with no preamble.

She shook her head, her ponytail flopping around behind her as she did. “Not really,” she half-answered. She didn’t want to tell Robin that Caleb had been living with her for a month, yet she’d never even brought herself to touch him, let alone make a move.

Robin squared her shoulders, raising herself to her full five foot one. “C’mon, Haleigh, you can’t just let him get away. What if he’s interested?”

“Why would a man like Caleb be interested in me?” she asked, her hand flying to her mouth when she realized she’d named him.

“Caleb Everett?” Robin asked, eyes wide. “Word is he hasn’t been home at all in the last few weeks.” She shot Haleigh a sly look. “Where exactly has he been all this time?”

“I don’t know,” she lied, but knew Robin didn’t believe her. She doubted she was very convincing anyway. She’d been lying for years, but even if she’d given an Oscar-worthy performance, she’d opened her mouth and blurted his name.

The other woman made a scoffing noise. “How can you believe he isn’t interested if he’s been staying with you for so long?” She tilted her head to study Haleigh. “Do you not see how beautiful you are? God, I’d kill for skin like yours, and imagine if you wore a little makeup.” She paused. “You’d be a knockout.”

A knockout? “Are you on painkillers?”

Robin’s face scrunched up at the question. “You really don’t see it, do you?”

See what? She was pale, with blonde hair that badly needed a trim, blue eyes that were too close together, lips that were too full, breasts that were too small, and hips that were too wide. “I’m certainly no model.”

“That’s what you think. I say you let me make you over. See what happens then.”

She eyed her patient and friend, a woman who always looked put together even when she came in for sessions, her hair perfect, her makeup artfully applied. “Maybe I should.”

“You bet you should. You’ll knock his socks off.”

Even if she did, she had no idea what to do with him afterward. She winced inwardly. For a woman who’d been married for three years, she had absolutely no idea what to do with a man who didn’t just take whatever he wanted. Caleb wasn’t the type to take, he was the type to give, and that scared her more than anything else.

Two Weeks and Counting!

So… FIGHT FOR ME is due out in two weeks (13 days if we want to get technical), so we are right now in the throes of editing/revising.  Sometimes I think it’s harder to edit and revise than actually write the book because you have to cut things you really like in order for things to make sense, flow better, etc.  So, at the risk of sounding like a whiner, it’s no fun!

If I’m not around much on facebook/twitter/pinterest, etc, you know where I am!

Oh, and since it’s Wednesday, why not a snippet?

She stomped her foot, her beautiful mouth compressed into a hard line, her brows drawn together. “Dammit, Dylan, I can’t do this.”

Can’t do what? He needed a scorecard to keep up with this woman. “What?”

“I can’t leave you.”

You know when you get to the part of a book that makes you yell at characters and  bite your nails?  Yeah, that’s where I am, but it’s not as fun to write as it is to read…  I haven’t been around much online (the whole facebook/twitter/pinterest world is just slightly distracting!), but I am plugging away at this book.  So… shall we do our Wednesday WIP?  Why not?

Her gaze swept up his body, finally connecting to his golden eyes, the lust and heat she saw there completely ensnaring her. She blew out a breath. She could straddle him in less than a minute and be calling his name in five, but that wouldn’t be satisfying. Not for what she had in mind. Before she could talk herself out of it, she slammed the truck back in drive and sped down the road.

So, yesterday was Wednesday which means I missed a post.  The good news is I did write, but the end of this book isn’t just appearing like I had hoped…  It’s coming together, though, I promise.  I did add a page detailing Tyler the way I had one for Aylesford yesterday, and although it’s still very much a work in progress, you can find it here: http://haydenbraeburn.weebly.com/tyler.html.

The book is slowly but surely coming together, and now it’s time for the snippet I promise every Wednesday even though it’s Thursday and stuff.

He hit the door close button, leaving the two of them alone in the car. “I’m not sure. A feeling like we were being watched.”

“Your spidey senses?” she joked.

He managed a smile. “You don’t stay alive in war zones without them, darlin’.”

“I’m glad you have them then,” she said softly.

Him too. Now, he just had to figure out what had his nerves on edge.

Wednesday Already?

Honestly, I can’t believe it’s already Wednesday.  This week has just flown so far, and I’m a little stuck in the book.  Usually that means I’m trying to make characters do things they don’t want to do, so I have to pull back, let it stew, and let what happens next present itself, since what I had planned isn’t right.  I have faith it will work itself out shortly, but it’s not my favorite part of writing to say the least.

So, since it is Wednesday…

She nodded, that cascade of reddish-brown hair falling over her shoulder. He wanted to pull her to him, make whatever problem had entered her mind go away, but he waited. She was a thinker, and a talker. He just had to let her do both.

“What are we doing, Dylan?” she asked.

“I was hoping we were about to make love,” he answered. He had a boner from the depths of hell, her husky voice almost making him come in his pants earlier, but he had to say the next part.

Happy Wednesday!

Happy Wednesday!  Yeah, yeah, I know it’s not really any more special than any other Wednesday, but have a happy one anyway.  So, why am I so chipper?  A couple reasons: I’ve only had weather-related migraines since I started this diet (yay!), and Fight For Me is coming along and has grown by nearly 4000 words since my last post.  The strange thing about those 4000 words is they started out in a notebook and then were transcribed into the document.  I know I’ve talked about my love of longhand here more than once, but it is sort of a strange phenomena with this book.  I will sit here looking at the screen and nothing is coming, then I go upstairs with a notebook and it just flows.  Whatever works, right?

So, time for our snippet.

“No!” she screamed before she could stop herself. She swallowed, collected her thoughts. “I mean, I’m not leaving you, Dylan. I can’t.” Again, she’d said more than she’d meant to, and without thinking. What the hell was going on with her?

My writing schedule, if you can call it that, has now been turned on its ear.  Since I’m now getting up at the buttcrack of dawn to get children ready for school and I keep falling asleep in my chair before midnight, I am now trying to write in the mornings (yeah, like now).  The good part is: I have been writing, so there we go.  So… as promised, a snippet from Fight For Me.

When she finally disconnected the call, he found himself asking, “You got a thing with good ol’ J.D.?”

Her dark eyes narrowed. “Would it matter?”

“Hell yes, it would.”

She glared at him. “No, I don’t have a thing going with J.D.” She walked away a few steps before turning sharply. “Do you think I would’ve kissed you if I had a thing with anyone else?” She marched back to him, her long finger poised to poke him in his chest. “I told you I don’t do casual.”

Dylan and Cassidy, Fight For Me, The Everetts of Tyler, Wednesday WIP

I have been a crazy person lately, so this Wednesday WIP is a short and sweet post.  A little sexy snippet from Fight For Me.

“Don’t mess with me, woman. If you don’t climb down right now, I am not responsible for my actions,” he warned.

She was moving, but not to get off. He held back a laugh at his thought. Getting off was exactly her aim, rubbing her mound against the hard ridge of his cock.  He’d never wanted to be inside a woman more than he did right now, but he let her take the lead. He would be patient if it killed him.

Wednesday WIP (and other stuff, too!)

All Summer Long, Double Down, Fool's Gold, Forever and a Day, Jill Shalvis, Katie Porter, Lucky Harbor, Susan Mallery, Wednesday WIP

Good news: I have been slightly less distracted with the Olympics and have been writing.

Bad news: What I thought was a reveal in the plot turned into a twist…  We’ll see how that works out for our lovely hero and heroine.

So, first the excerpt from Fight For Me you expect on Wednesdays

He held back a groan. Was he sure? “I wanted to toss you on the floor before we left, pin you to the wall at your parents house, have you ride me in the truck. I am not the one who has to be sure, Cassie. It’s you.”

“I.” She closed her mouth, her eyes tracking the lights in the ceiling, and he prayed the rest of the sentence was “want you.”

And now, something I haven’t done in a great while–I read a book!  I know, I know, the ticker-tape parade should be headed my way any minute now.  All kidding aside, I haven’t been reading the way I used to because of this pesky writing thing (and no, I’m not complaining, just stating facts).  I actually, believe it or not, was able to read three books in the past couple weeks (to the detriment of sleep, but who needs that, right?)

Oddly, they are all series books, and two are the third of trilogies within series (I know, I know my addiction is showing).  First, we have Forever and a Day by Jill Shalvis.  Third in the Chocoholics trilogy within the Lucky Harbor Series, this book is my favorite of the three and quite possibly my favorite of the six.  It centers on doctor, father, and weight-of-the-world carrier, Josh Scott and dog walker/nanny/bookkeeper/not-sure-what-she’s-doing Grace Brooks.  Of course, as expected, there are strong supporting characters in both sets of best friends (and stars of the two previous trilogy books), Mallory and Ty and Amy and Matt, not to mention Josh’s son and sister and the rest of the delightfully nosy citizens of Lucky Harbor.  Josh is trying to hold down the fort and control his world, and Grace is, well, Grace is a necessary and wonderful rocking to his boat.  You know me–I am not a synopsis writer, and I don’t do spoilers, but suffice to say this is a book (and series) so worth reading.

Next we have Double Down by Katie Porter.  This is the first of a series revolving around Air Force fighter pilots, and as soon as I finished this book I pre-ordered the other two.  Major Ryan Haverty has a predilection for role-play and when he meets Cassandra Whitman she’s wearing seamed stockings with her waitress uniform.  A hot and heavy relationship ensues, and although Cassandra is all-in with the role-playing, Ryan feels like his wants and needs are dirty and wrong.  This is a hot book, and although I think the good Major is way too hard on himself, I very much enjoyed it.

Last we have All Summer Long by Susan Mallery.  Like Forever and a Day, this is the third in a trilogy within a series, this one wrapping up the three Stryker brothers with the wholly delectable Clay Stryker.  Former model and Hollywood butt double, he has come home to Fool’s Gold to be near his family and do something with his hands instead of standing around looking hot.  His heroine is Charlie, a firefighter struggling with feeling like an ugly duckling and issues with men.  Naturally, she asks Clay to help her and just as naturally, she doesn’t believe  he could be attracted to her because he’s so perfect.  I love Fool’s Gold, and enjoyed this story a little more than some of the others because (*spoiler alert*) there is no unplanned pregnancy!

Sooo…. Now, it’s back to my own fictional small town.  See ya Sunday!

It’s Wednesday, and you know what that means.  From Fight For Me.

“Just be careful, Cass.” He paused, a slight chuckle vibrating the phone against her ear. “Next time you disappear, I won’t worry, I’ll just assume all is good in Hotsexlandia.”

“Really, J.D.? Hotsexlandia? You graduated top of your class from Harvard Law, yet you say things like that?

His chuckle gave way to a full laugh. “Harvard Law does not a comedian make.” He took a breath, his tone much more somber when he went on to reiterate his earlier caution, “Just be careful, Cass.”

“I will,” she promised. “You don’t have to worry about me.”

“Somehow, I don’t believe you.”
